Once upon a time, really not very long ago, if you wanted to know what it was like to play guitar you bought a guitar, learnt some chords and got sore fingertips before strumming out that first baby-steps, three or four chord song – usually “Knockin On Heavens Door,” “Smoke on the Water” or, if you bought a capo too, “Wonderwall.”

Then, as you progressed from strumming chords you could pick out individual strings and when you threw in a D and G you had “Everybody Hurts” and as the skill builds up you could tackle those songs that would make your wrist fall off with practice such as the circus like riff that opens “Sweet Child Of Mine.” With every Nirvana riff nailed a feeling of satisfaction would emerge and you’d become braver, tackling more complex sounding tracks such as Jane’s Addiction’s “Just Because” before your confidence was up enough to play with other guitar bashers – or, in technical terms: musicians – and learn more.

At least, that’s how I did it.

Not anymore though. This thing called Guitar Hero traversed its way from Japanese arcades to shop shelves. A miniature, plastic little guitar shaped controller with colour coded buttons in place of frets. No need to learn actual chords and riffs when you can push coloured buttons, as prompted along to guitar classics. Then there’s sequels and dedicated editions. Not to mention being able to hook it up with your mates games and have face-offs. If only you could do such things with REAL guitars.

Then there’s Rock BAND – to give you all the fun of being in a real band without any of that troublesome stuff of say, buying instruments, learning instruments, learning and writing songs and.. creating. Oh no, who needs that when you can spend upwards of 70 quid on a fake guitar or drumkit which, by the way, you look really cool playing, and PRETEND?! Wow, with one person singing, one person pushing buttons pretending to play guitar and another hitting colour coded drum pads it’s almost like you’re in a band! Wow.

Let me illustrate how I see this in terms of the devolution of music: imagine you’re walking down the street. You walk past a house and the garage door is open, inside a drummer twirling the bolts on top of the symbols and setting up while two kids churn out guitar chords and lanky kid with a bass (they’re always the lanky ones) tunes up. Two minutes later they’re in the middle of a slightly loose and ever so slightly out of tune cover of “Love Buzz.” It’s not great but they’re getting there and in a few months they’ll be playing it infront of people and calling themselves something like Plastic Glass and people will be jumping up and down. Teenage girls will be adoring them and soon they’ll be writing their own tunes and maybe, this is just a maybe mind as the record industry is in a scary state, they might even get to make an album.

Keep walking down the metaphorical street.

Now you come to a house with no net curtains, you can see straight through the window. Inside there’s a large tv and around it three young adults, one of them has what looks like a microphone in his hand, another has something resembling a stratocaster (it even says Fender on the headstock but you can’t see that from the street) and the other is sat behind what looks like half a drumkit but somehow.. not quite right. Then as images appear on the screen they start what looks like a game of make believe and dance around as if they’re pretending to be the band that made the music on the game. Never mind they didn’t write it, never mind that they don’t know how to really play but they are going to pretend they did. After three and a half excruciating minutes of watching these people pretend (just be grateful the kids in this house aren’t into it enough to dress up too) they do a little excited jump – perhaps even a little chest bump – and celebrate the fact that they got enough points to unlock another song they can pretend to play.

Now if people continue to do this instead copying songs at the first place you stopped how will music get made? Where will the soundtracks for your Make Pretend Game come from?! If you ask me, the only difference between Rock Band/ Guitar Hero and the old Harry Enfield sketch of Tim Nice-But Dim rocking out with his tennis racket to Dire Strait’s “Sultans of Swing” is that his racket wasn’t actually shaped like a little plastic guitar and could do something useful like play tennis.

It’s getting so bad that bands are actually releasing their songs ONLY via these games.

So yeah, if you wanna know what it’s like to be a gangster and blow things up then by all means by a game. And yes it may be fun and quicker than actually learning but if you want to know what it’s really like to play guitar, buy one. You can pick them up cheap enough to start learning on – easily as cheap as buying the game and controllers. If you want to get the rock band experience find a couple of friends that play instruments – not toy ones – and play with them. Trust me, it’s the most fun you’ll have.

Many people who decide to learn how to play the guitar eventually end up thinking that they would now like to teach the guitar. There are many people interested in taking guitar lessons, so if you curious about whether or not people would pay you for the lessons, there should be no doubts as to whether someone would pay you to teach them guitar playing and be happy to do it. There are not enough guitar teachers available but are so very many people interested in learning to play. It would be a fantastic idea if you are just now considering possibly pursuing this job.

First thing is first, now you will have to try and decide on how much you are wanting to charge your students for your guitar lessons. The average fee for guitar lessons, if someone plays for 30 mins, is about $20. So you can choose to go with that amount or possibly even a little bit higher just to see if you could actually get that amount for your guitar lessons. It would not hurt to atleast try going with that amount first. Try it a few times and if it does not work, stick with $20 for every thirty minutes.

Once you begin teaching guitar lessons and earning money by doing so, you will have to pay the store that helped you to get students in the first place, they will get 30% of what you earn, you get 70% of this income. The split between you the teacher and the store that helped you get the students will really just depend on what terms you are both going by. If the teacher collects the payments from his students then he will get the full 70%, however, if the store is the one collecting all of the payments, then the store will receive 30%, no less.

Remember an important thing when you begin teaching your students guitar lessons, always keep in close communications with the parents of any kids that you may be teaching guitar to. The parents are the one paying the fees for the guitar lessons, they always just really want to know if they are getting their moneys worth by paying you for guitar lessons for their kid. If they think you are not putting in all that you have for their kid they will more than likely choose to pull the kid out from your lessons.

Word of mouth gets around really fast, if you get a bad reputation right at the beginning, then you can probably be prepared for a not so good clientele. It is important to prove yourself in the beginning so that the word will get out there, that you are the teacher they should be coming to, in order to learn how to play the guitar. Your reputation is everything, especially when it comes to business and people being interested in paying you for your services. So, do all the homework before you begin teaching guitar lessons, so that you will be a reputable, honest, sincere much loved, guitar teacher.

Do you have a child who wants to make his or her own guitar? You can build a guitar for the kids to play with on a rainy day with just a few simple materials.

Just throw some newspaper on the table and let them be creative with the paint, markers and glue. Here’s what you need:

• A shoe box
• Seven or Eight Rubber bands
• Some Paint
• Markers

First, take the top from the shoe box, and allow the kids to paint the box in whatever colors they want. After you let the shoebox dry, you will build a guitar by placing the rubber bands around the shoebox.

You want to place them around the smaller width of the box. You should place them all the same width away from each other.

To allow the kids to further build a guitar that they will love, you can let them glue on sparkly accessories, a length of string so they can place the guitar around their neck, or any kind of other decorations they want.

A great idea if you have more than one kid is to make them some other instruments, like homemade maracas, or drums. They will love having a band, or just playing one instrument, and you will love the fact that they’re occupied!

First of all, size does matter! Learning to play on the wrong size instrument can lead to frustration at best, often leading to giving up, possibly the worst consequence of learning on the wrong size is the development of poor technique.

Generally speaking, guitars are made according to four different sizes, referred to as quarter, half, three-quarters, and full size. The overall length of electric guitars varies greatly depending on brand, style design, and model, so the full length does not account for the size. For accurate sizing of an electric guitar, measure the distance from the “bridge” of the guitar to the “nut”. This is called the scale length of the guitar. This measurement is only of the part of the strings that actually vibrate when you stroke them or pluck one. Although lengths can sometimes vary, the following chart is a good indicator of the four different sizes of electric guitars.

Quarter size:  31”
Half size:  33”
Three-quarters size: 34-36”
Full size:  38-40”

The height of the child playing the guitar is what determines what size is the best fit. The following chart is a good reference:

Size of Guitar              Height of Player
Quarter size:               3’3” – 3’9”
Half size:                    3’10” – 4’5”
Three-quarters size:     4’6” – 4’11”
Full size:                     5’ or taller

It is much easier for a young child to get his hands around the appropriate sized guitar. If a child is bordering two sizes, it is recommended to buy the larger guitar simply because the child is still growing.

Technically speaking, there is no such thing as a “beginner’s guitar”. As far as the structural components of the instrument are concerned, all electric guitars have the basic 6 strings, several frets on the neck, and pickups. “Small” does not necessarily mean “beginner”. That being said, however, it is a good idea to buy a simple, low-cost, no-frills instrument for a child’s first electric guitar.

All brands manufacture such low-end basic electric guitars, but Ibanez and Yamaha are usually considered to be the best choice because these companies have targeted the novice player in several of their models. 

Getting a kids’ electric guitar is an exciting event for both the child and the parent. Remember, the most important factors to consider when buying kids’ electric guitars are: a) the passion and dreams of the child, and b) the right size for the child’s body.

20th Century dictionaries define a guitar as “a stringed instrument played by strumming.”

Today, the guitar can no longer be defined in this way, as the way of playing guitar has changed dramatically. From about the middle of the 20th Century “playing guitar” has evolved tremendously and has risen to vistas totally unimaginable to guitar players before this time.

Key to this was the advent of the electric guitar, and amplification. And with this, came players who took these two things and explored higher realms with them, experimenting with and adding upon earlier efforts and ideas until 50 years later we have what we have today: a much wider perspective of what it means to “play guitar” today.

If you think about it, back in the day before electric guitars and amps, what other way of playing a guitar was there other than “by strumming?” That ridiculous and now defunct dictionary definition came from that time.

In the early days of electric guitar (1920′s and 1930′s), electric guitars were really just glorified miked up acoustic guitars. They were played and treated as if they were acoustic guitars that you didn’t have to hold up next to a microphone any more. Put yourself in the shoes of the people of those times. That would have been incredibly innovative! You can walk two steps with your guitar and still be heard! Wow!

It would be much later, in the 1950s, that a new thing would happen that would totally revolutionize guitar playing and Music as a whole: the invention of the solid-body guitar.

During this primitive era prior to the 1950′s, the guitar was most definitely a right handed instrument built to be strummed with the right hand and chords fingered with the left hand. The theory was that the “strong” arm of the player (being right handed) would be the one to keep the rhythm hence, the task of strumming was for the right hand. You had to keep time with your strums. Left hand technique in those days was limited to managing finger-chords and maybe a few barre chords. By today’s standards, that concept is as limited and outdated as black and white, tube-powered television!

So, what are we talking about here?

Firstly, you need to refresh yourself as to what happened in the 1950′s and 1960′s.

Three major material advances happened: 

The invention of the solid body guitar. With solid body electric guitars such as the Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul, the electric guitar could no longer be played and heard without an amplifier. Now you needed something more than just the guitar to be heard, and this required new skills to be learned.

 

Advances in amplification were required, and were quickly invented or further improved in order to cope with the necessary volumes required for larger crowds, and larger concerts and festivals. Advances in amplification opened the door to advances in guitar playing: using feedback, sustain, purposefully employed overdrive and distortion. Higher volumes enabled new things to be possible.

 

Experimentation with sound processing created new “effects” such as “wah wah”, “delay”, “echo”, “tremolo”, “phaser”, “flanger”, “compression”, etc. This turned the guitar into an instrument that was now capable, through effects, of producing all new sounds, never even envisioned before. These new sounds also required new skills of the guitarist in order to utilize the full scope of these effects. 

With these material advances came the corresponding new wave of guitarists who were the first to use and experiment with these new things. From the “bubble gum”era of the 1950′s, through the Psychedelic 1960s, and the experimental, drug-induced 1970′s, came the first of the “guitar greats” such as Chuck Berry, Duane Alman, Alvin Lee, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Keith Richard, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Gary Rossington, Dave Gilmour, Steve Jones, Gary Moore, and many, many more. These innovators tried new things and were able to make the guitar do more (or in some cases less) than it had ever been required to “do” before. 

And then there was “lead guitar.” A whole new ball game! No strumming there! Now bands had “lead guitarists” as well as “rhythm guitarists.” New title, new duties, new skills. 

When American guitarist Eddie Van Halen came on the scene with the song “Eruption” in 1978, a whole new world opened up for guitarists. New techniques such as “finger tapping” came to be. Now people used TWO HANDS on the fret board! 

Following that, the 1980′s gave way to a whole new wave of highly-skilled, impressive guitar players, playing the guitar in ways never played before. People like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads, Jake-E-Lee, The Edge, Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, George Benson, Robert Smith, and thousands more guitarists took guitar playing to levels even higher than those laid by the guitar greats from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s. 

During this same time in the 1980′s the “whammy bar” came into it’s own. Floyd Rose and Kahler were two companies that came up with floating tremolo systems that allowed new and more extreme whammy bar techniques without driving the guitar hopelessly out of tune. And new possibilities were created yet again. 

By the time the 1990′s came about, playing guitar was so far above what it meant to play guitar in the pre-electric guitar era that the two concepts had become almost like chalk and cheese. 

The guitar was no longer a “strumming instrument” and hadn’t been for a good few decades and generations! 

And by this, a new fact emerges: to become a really good guitarist today, a right handed person needs to learn how to play guitar “left handed.” This means that the right handed person’s “strong” hand plays the fretboard. This is in direct contrast to the “traditional” teachings that the “strong hand” strums the guitar (and keeps time.) If you want to dazzle people with you skills and play up and down the fret board like a Guitar God, why would you put your “weak” hand to the hardest task? It’s your “strong hand” that should be on the fret board doing the “hard work.” 

And this is direct opposition to how people are generally taught how to play guitar today even though that mentality is totally obsolete. 

To make this very clear: Your “strong” hand needs to be the one on the fretboard. For a right handed person, that is your right hand. For a left handed person it is their left hand. Your “weak” hand should be the one that holds the plectrum. Your “strong” hand is the one that should be playing the fret board!  

There is some proof here easily attainable. Look up the really great guitar heroes and take a look at how many of them are actually left handed people who play guitar right handed. 

The opposite to that would be right handed people who play guitar left handed. 

Right handed people need to learn to play guitar left handed if they want to take guitar playing to levels beyond “strumming. ” PARENTS TAKE NOTE. This rests with you in the main. If your kid wants to become a “great guitarist”, get them a left handed guitar, if they are right handed and give them a right handed guitar if they are left handed. 

Do this and lo and behold: NEW VISTAS OF GUITAR ACHIEVEMENT ARE POSSIBLE. We live in the 21st Century and guitar playing is nothing like it was in the Dinosaur days of the early 20th Century.

Left Hand guitar players the world over have always had a problem with availability of left handed guitars.

Many left handed people newly learning to play guitar end up learning to play right handed out of frustration. Many experienced left handed guitarists have simply become apathetic and given up looking for that which is abundant for right handed players.
