My Dad said I could use his guitar and if I learnt to play they would buy me one. I did not know what it would be like – I am 14 so not really a kid but it was cool, not childish at all.

Shortly after this fad had started, it diminished and he was no longer interested in guitar. Now whilst I understand kids go through phases I was a little reluctant to encourage or advocate the fact he was no longer interested after spending so much money.

Many of us would love our kids to pick up a fun an interesting hobby, like the guitar or some other instrument. Personally, I have found it extremely fun and entertaining to teach my kids guitar, but that was only after I was able to get them interested in it as well. At first, it was possibly the most tiring and frustrating thing in the world. My son would practice for a moment or two, then he would go and watch cartoons or play video games. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to learn, it was just he didn’t have the patience for it. Soon, I’d developed a system to getting him absolutely fascinated with practicing his guitar and staying on track to practice up to an hour every day. It wasn’t long before he was playing his favorite songs, and even formed his own little band with his friends.

The first thing I did to make a practice schedule perfect to teach my kids guitar, was I made it FUN! If it’s not fun, who’s going to do it(especially in the case of kids)? How did I do that? Simple, I just lightened the mood! Being strict with something as fun playing instruments can make it a real downer.

I made it challenging. I broke each practice into parts. When he had to learn a new technique, I challenged him. When I was a boy, I loved challenges, and my son was is no different. How dare I say he can’t do 40 chord changes in a minute?

I practiced WITH HIM. This is huge. I’m a firm believer in teaching by example. I would never ask my kids to do something that I wouldn’t do.

My son found a guitar idol that he looked up to. Inspiration is key. Without inspiration, even the best guitar player won’t want to practice.

I rewarded him for practicing consistently, as well. After practice every day, we’d go get some ice cream to celebrate. As a whole, teaching my kids guitar become a huge bonding experience after we were able to push through the initial period of them not wanting to practice.

Those are the methods I used to help teach my kids guitar. It went from being not fun in any way whatsoever, to being a family bonding activity.
